Make Space for Mental Health
As the pull to get cozy and spend more time inside during the Fall & Winter months naturally happens, we should be aware of how less sunlight and outdoor socialization affects our moods. Less daylight means less Vitamin D from the sun and decreased serotonin. This seasonal change can also disrupt our circadian rhythm (sleeping patterns). Plus, if you find yourself being more of a homebody in Winter this can also have effects, like lower levels of oxytocin – the hormone that’s released during emotional connections with friends or family.
So what do we do about it? Well, I’ve got some tips.
- Morning Coffee Outside – This month we’re talking a lot about making space in your home, so why not find that small space outside too. Set up a chair with a cozy blanket that you can move to the sun. It doesn’t have to be a fancy setup – I’m talking a folding chair with a blanket if that’s the easiest or simply stepping onto the patio, balcony or sidewalk to sip your morning cup. Get the early sun on your face to set your circadian rhythm and soak in the Vitamin D.
- Plan a Weekly Friend Walk or Stroll through the Park – I love having a standing date with a friend so I know the walk and talk is going to happen and I get the oxytocin boost. Another great option is to walk a busy area of the park where you can chat with a neighbor or a street where you might pop into some shops and say hello.
- Practice Habit Stacking – What simple, everyday habits can you identify to add on a wellness activity to improve your mental health? Have you been putting off a meditation practice or simply more mindful moments with rhythmic breathing? This Real Simple article gives a great breakdown of habit stacking and clear examples you can use to take action. Note the deep breathing minute the article mentions while you wait for the tea kettle to heat up.
Here’s to keeping those serotonin and oxytocin levels up. You deserve to take time for yourself so you can show up for the people in your life.
